Project: Building a decent website. The beginning.

Hello, and I’m already annoyed. Paragraphs start with indents. Why can’t I add an indent?

I’ve gotten countless blogs setup in the past, mostly for clients or friends. All the ones I’ve setup myself, though, have tended to just die off due to lack of interest. The truth is: I’ve always wanted to document what I’m doing and learning in a way that benefits others, tying them to myself instead of a “greater” entity like a company I’m working with/for. Combine that growing interested and a healthy dose of desire for anonymity online and you have exactly what I’m trying to work through here.

As you can probably tell, I’ve an interest in written media and lack an interest in video and audio media for sharing knowledge. While I respect them — I feel that there is just less and less relevant written media. I really appreciate that, in most paragraphs, you can tell if the content is relevant within the first sentence and skip if not. This isn’t something I’ve been able to do effectively with video and audio as most streams are like old cassettes making it difficult to jump sections and markers are only now beginning to become a “thing”. In written form, you can judge relevance quickly and move on, just like you did with this paragraph.

This project’s goal building a decent website that I can use to document my knowledge and things I learn for my reference and so that anyone following it can see my process and hopefully be more efficient at their own. In this project’s case: I hope to learn how to use it effectively to deliver the content I choose in a simple and effective way for the reader. If I learn, during that process, some new and effective ways to achieve that goal, then that’s what this is all about.

Site’s Mission Statement (Draft): “To generate a target market of like minds who love learning through relevant topics and create a content sharing platform for those like minds where one’s life experience can assist others more effectively.” Cool, right? I just created that.

Core Values (Draft):

  1. Create a clean and simple interface within which content can be found easily.
  2. To provide a constructive platform to share information.
  3. To remember that entertainment is necessary for information retention.
  4. Understand that individuality can add to the dialogue as long as other’s individuality’s are respected.
  5. More to come.

Goals of this site:

  1. To document the learning process in a way that assists my memory and effectively helps others.
  2. To be relevant beyond one post (this is a problem with many of my other blogs).
  3. To be monetized in a not-so-annoying way.
  4. To get out of the way of the content.

Milestones:

  1. Setup a base site with a decent theme from which to start creating content with. – Currently working on this.
  2. Create Flexible and Efficient Content Additions (if it’s a chore to add content, I’m just not going to keep up with it).
  3. Select base plugins that honor the Mission Statement and Core Values
  4. Monetize it.
  5. Open it to criticism, commentary, and use those ideas for growth.

If you find yourself here, and you’re reading this — thanks for viewing. My hope is to further document my progress as I go for others to reference.

So SEO Optimization will shush:

Building a decent website

Building a decent website

I mean really, 3 times in such a small post? I feel like that would just be grating to the reader.

One note: It took me WAY too long to figure out image alignment. It’s actually at the bottom of the image inputs at the select image box.
